Fresh idea

After having another chat, we all understood that we needed something that would really illustrate the square mile and what it involves. For this I think we are quite settled on a short video that will be the main information source and feature, possibly one that can be accessed online.
However, the problem of actually get the audience to go and view it was the real issue. This therefore was what I was trying to conquer with this idea.
After a bit more research into businesses and brands that had fallen and then managed to get back into the peoples favour there were certain aspects that we could use but nothing that seemed to fully work with finance. My next research topic was random videos, posters, messages, adverts etc that had suddenly gone viral and were massively popular. From this a common theme was occurring, this being the idea that each of these items seemed to have something hidden (be it a piece of information, the bigger picture or something else) with what it was saying. This commonly being achieved by not completely giving away its true identity.
Another factor that we had to bring to this project is, one of the best ways to get the people to relate to what you are saying is to make what you are saying humanised.

The above image was the start of the following idea:

“Advert idea:

(image of a woman dressed casually with the following details appearing next to her)

Name: Sarah Smith
Age: 32
Family: Husband, 2 children

Weekend activities: washing, ironing, take kids to football practice, cook dinner, take kids to party, tidy house etc

Stresses: not enough hours in the day, bills, mortgage, kids education etc

(blank screen)

… Looking into a mirror?….

(back to image of Sarah)

Occupation: City of London Banker

… Still looking in the mirror? ….

‘the London financial district is starting the future today’

‘to find out more and get your say join them here … Squaremile.com’

(logo comes up with tag line that I haven’t quite got yet) ”

With this idea there is scope to do an advert that relates to the key target markets.

An idea

As a first idea, we came up with something that a large percentage of people can have access to and it a little more modern. In short, a London financial district or Square Mile App was our idea. The app would be an interactive way of informing people about the workings of the square mile, what’s there (and not just the financial side) who works there, a section for the users thoughts and ideas on how to improve the square mile and possibly an area in which those visiting and working there can communicate in a twitter/forum/check-in type system would run.
This idea stemmed from the fact that, when researching there was an huge amount of information that I and us as a group pulled together never knowing before. However, finding information that clearly shows that the SM is not such a terrible place is hard work. You really have to dig deep into the surface of doom and gloom before you find the true story. This therefore led us the thinking about the easiest ways in which to get clear and snappy pieces of information the the population with out it being forced onto them. There would be a game/reward concept built within this app model as well. This idea would be that if you was using the app a certain number of times, or interacting with the rest of the community then you would get rewarded with small discounts or “1 free coffee” on your next visit to Costa SQ.

However, after more scrutiny of this idea and some professional help it is concluded that this idea may not be the best route to go down. For an app to work it needs people to actually want to search for it and download themselves, which with the current mood towards finances and those in charge, would in itself be a hefty task. We now need to go back to the drawing room.

First thoughts

Know that this was going to be a very tricky brief to, not only, get into the guys of, but to actually deliver something that is relevant and effective. At present the London financial district is not the most loved of places by ‘the people’ and therefore this makes trying to find a brand or element the target market will not only engage with but be willing to engage will, rather a troublesome task.

My first thoughts were to simply through down some key words that sprang to mind when I thought of the Square Mile. Money, Pin Stripe and Skyscraper: these being just a few of the words that really didn’t help me at all. After, meeting with James and Rich, for the first team meeting it became clear that none of us seemed to really understand the full extent of what happens and is situated within the Square Mile.

Assignment 2

“What are the methods, justifications and impacts of transgression on the rhetorics of a media of your choice? ”

Elements that I need to include:

– How are people transgressing the rhetorical position of a text?
– What ways do they justify these actions?
– What relationship does this have with the development or long-term security of a text?

Also concepts such as:

– Biopower
– Detournement
– Liminal thinking
– The Multitude
